About Us

Our building was constructed in the early 1900s by Daniel Webster Clark -- a visionary who saw the endless possibilities of the South Shore and Humarock in particular.  In order to supply the thriving community that he almost single-handedly transformed, Mr. Clark established a general store and post office, where he served as postmaster for the last 17 years of his life.

Clark's General Store met with some stiff competition in the 1940s and 50s when the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (later shortened to A&P) built a grocery store directly across the street.  To this day, people refer to our building as "Clark's" as it remained in the Clark family until the early 1980s.

Sands End Café now occupies the space that was once the post office and our Marketplace was the former general store.  Some of our "regulars" still remember a famous face visiting both the A&P and Clark's -- none other than Marilyn Monroe.  Joe DiMaggio's  family (Joe being Marilyn's then husband) owned property in the area.

These days, Sands End Café & Marketplace is a favorite stop for Steven Tyler when he returns home to nearby Marshfield and TV & movie star Steve Carell owns a little store just up the road (that you might want to visit as well).
